Participatory Mapping Sessions

Migrant women community leaders (dirigentas) in Antofagasta’s campamentos are organizing for the urbanization or “radication” (as opposed to “eradication”) of their self-built neighborhoods. I have worked with dirigentas to this end, conducting participatory mapping sessions, which have been used in negotiations with the state. These mapping sessions, pictured below, seek to materialize invisibilized ways of occupying and using the space of campamentos that bolster dirigentas’ claims to their settlements.
